Coronavirus not among 10 most common causes of death

There were 2,703 excess deaths across England and Wales in September, official figures show – but coronavirus was not in the 10 leading causes of fatality.

The numbers released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), are relative to the five-year average, counting from 2015 to 2019.

The leading cause of death in September for both nations was dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

However, coronavirus was the underlying cause of death in 11.5% of all deaths in England and 9% of those in Wales from January to September this year.

But the data also shows more people who caught the illness, died.

The age-standardised death rate in England in September due to COVID-19 was 12.6 per 100,000 people, up from 7.2 per 100,000 in August

Yes, it is a press, certainly, but a press from which shall flow in inexhaustible streams, the most abundant and most marvelous liquor that has ever flowed to relieve the thirst of men!

Tier 3 lockdown restrictions begin for millions as London boroughs suffer Covid crisis ‘double whammy’

Millions of Britons will live under tougher coronavirus restrictions from today as new tiered measures and a two-week circuit-breaker come into force in England and Wales.

The 2.8 million people of Greater Manchester joined Liverpool City Region and Lancashire in the “very high risk” Tier 3 from midnight last night, while Wales’s population of 3.1 million will begin a 17-day “firebreak” lockdown at 6pm.

South Yorkshire will also move into the top Covid alert level from midnight, while Coventry, Stoke and Slough will join regions including London and Essex in Tier 2.

It comes as new analysis revealed that six London boroughs have suffered the highest levels of furloughed workers in the UK and soaring numbers of unemployment benefit claimants, as the economic damage wreaked by the Covid-19 crisis was laid bare.

Coronavirus latest news: ‘Absolutely terrifying’ impact of Covid admissions on northern hospitals revealed

The “absolutely terrifying” impact of coronavirus admissions on Northern hospitals has been revealed, after leaked NHS data reportedly shows more than 6,000 patients are being treated across England.

As of Thursday, almost 6,100 patients were in hospital with Covid-19 across the country, 4,670 were receiving oxygen and 563 were on ventilators, according to the data. This comes as figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) revealed that the death rate for coronavirus patients has increased in England for the time since the peak of the outbreak in April.

Hospitals in the North of England are bearing the brunt of cases, the NHS data shows, with more than a quarter of Liverpool University Hospital Trust beds occupied by Covid-19 patients. In Lancashire and South Cumbria, one in seven hospital beds were occupied by people suffering from coronavirus, and in the North East and Yorkshire almost one in 10, 1,531, patients were in hospital with the virus.

The NHS data was obtained through an investigation by the Health Service Journal and The Independent. Across Manchester hospitals, the data showed 11 per cent of the region’s beds are occupied with Covid-19 patients. One of the region’s intensive care doctors told The Independent the figures were “absolutely terrifying”. An NHS England spokesperson said: “Coronavirus cases and hospital admissions are rising and so it is vital everyone does what they can to control the virus, particularly by following government guidelines.

“Social distancing is the first line of defence, followed by the test and trace programme, but if infection still then spreads, the NHS has no choice but to activate local and regional escalation plans.”
